Default 106 sqn ORB lookup request - P A Wood (Navigator)

    Hi,
I am trying to find out some info for an old friend whose father served at RAF Metheringham flying Lancaster's during the latter part of WW2. All I know is that his name was Percy Alfred Wood and he was a Navigator on Lancaster's, possibly with 106 sqn and his pilot had the surname 'Ruff' (maybe 13368 William Frederick Ruff). Does anybody have a copy of the ORB where they could do a quick check of any Ops flown or any other knowledge of other squadrons serving at the same base in 1944.

Basically I am trying to find a starting point for further research.

    many thanks,
    Rick

    Hello,

The following "might" not relate to P. A. Wood/"Ruff", at all. That said, it might help someone checking the 106 Squadron ORB.

In the book, The Salford Lancaster The Fate of 106 Squadron's PB304, by Joe Bamford (pp.52-5), there is mention of the following:

25/7/1944 (Daylight) St Cyr Air Park.
    106 Squadron ORDER OF BATTLE.
    Lancaster LM641:ZN-P
Pilot/Captain - J25098 F/O (Pilot) Alan Alexander HARRIS RCAF (later DFC)

The narrative mentions that the Bomb Aimer in Harris' crew was one, F/O Ruff, who observed one of his bombs strike another Lancaster's rear turret.

A check of the July 1944 106 Squadron ORB would soon tell us if there was a "P.A. Wood", involved.

PS. I don't have the book, I worked from a snippet view on Google Books and added some details from other sources.

    Alain,

    So much for Bamford's credibilty!

    Thanks for that.

    (Huff = J25999 F/O L C HUFF RCAF)

If mentioned, could you please quote the complete crew of LM641* (Numbers, ranks & names).

    * No Lancaster carried the serial "LM614" (it fell within a black-out block).
