    Default 4 ERFTS loss 19/09/38

Seeking any info on the type and registration of an aircraft involved in a fatal crash near to Ruskington Fen, near Sleaford, Lincs on 19/09/38

It resulted in the death of passenger Acting P/O Denis Gerald Baker who was possibly either on detachment to 4 ERFTS from 49 Sqn (He is listed as a 49 Sqn loss on their Assn website) - or he was on a "one-off" flight with 4 ERFTS instead

The (injured) Pilot was P/O H.A.C. "Birdy" Bird-Wilson who eventually rose through the ranks to reach AVM

Any info will be gratefully received as part of ongoing research regarding Actg P/O Baker and his potential inclusion within the pre-war losses database at the IBCC Lincoln

    Kind Regards

    Tony

On 19 September 1938 BA Swallow 2 G-AFIG crashed near Cranwell when it was caught in a storm while on a navigation course, this resulted in the death of the pilot: Plt Off Dennis Gerald Baker and an injury to the passenger Harold Arthur Cooper ‘Birdy’ Bird-Wilson 'Birdy' which resulted in him losing his nose. Note: This incident was NOT in 1939 as per some Obituaries of Bird-Wison.

During his recovery, he was placed in the care of Archibald McIndoe and became No 2 in the famous 'Guinea Pig Club' (even though club not formed till 1941)
