Default F/Sgt Edward Campbell, 1142447 - Soviet Medal for Distinguished Service in Battle

    Hello everyone

I've come across a reference in the Cumberland News to the award of the 'Medal for Distinguished Service in Battle' to Flight Sergeant Edward Campbell, 7 Sqn, who lost his life in Lancaster JB224 on February 15/16th 1944. The award was gazetted in the LG of April 11th 1944.

So, what is this award, and how did F/Sgt Campbell come to be awarded it? It's not one I've come across before.

    Many thanks,

    Regards

    Simon

    Simon,

Not much help with your medal query.

Campbell was involved in the following incident earlier in his career:

    3-4 Sep 1943
    115 Sqn
    Lancaster II DS658:KO-K
    Op: Berlin

T/o 2045 Little Snoring. On return to base the Lancaster ran off the end of the runway and was damaged beyond repair. At the time of the crash, the Lancaster had accumulated 128.05 flying hours since delivery to the Squadron on 13 May 1943. No injuries reported.

    Sgt J Dalziel
    Sgt J McLachlan
    Sgt L Karwood
    Sgt R Bett
    Sgt E Marshall
    Sgt E Campbell

    Thanks both for the replies.

I'm still not 100% sure about the relevance of the award - unfortunately I don't have access to the article in the Cumberland News itself, just a record that there is a report. A mystery...
