    Default Beaufighters for Israel 1948

    Gents
The story of the smuggle of Beaufighters to Israel is quite well known. I cannot find the exact date of the event, though. It is known, that one of the pilots, Campbell was killed, with the dates ranging from 28 May, 28 July, and 30 August 1948. It is unclear, if other aircraft were flown to Israel the same day, or after that date.
    Anybody can help?

    Hello,
See this link from 2002 -

I provided RAF/Civil Reg and IDFAF numbers.

    https://forum.keypublishing.com/show...l-Beaufighters

Just spotted an error in the link posted by me, Lancaster ND929 ( not ND9259 as written) was the serial number usually refered to as being the Beaufighter serial number and was of course incorrect.
    Correct number was NT929.

Thanks, but I have found that info already. I am after circumstances of the deal, rather than aircraft.

    Hello Franek,
"Spitfires over Israel" has on pages 201/5 details of method/purchase of military equipment and names like Harvey(Farnsworth) and Zur with details of the film company.

Thanks, but I have those names. The thing I am looking for is a connection with another group, also involved in some smuggle to Israel. One man claimed to be involved in the Beaufighter plot, but I find no confirmation at all. It could be a fairy tale.

    Hi Bruce
Two of the link I have not seen, thanks. It looks that in the interview Zurr does provide some misleading info, though. No wonder, secrecy and legal responsibility of those involved justified this. No doubt there were plenty of people involved, not only those named. The connection I am looking for are people like Eddie Chapman, Graham Pearson, and Jimmy Swanston, the latter two being pilots. I presume the account confused two different smuggling attempts, though I cannot positively exclude participation of the men. There was also an attempt to hi-jack Tempests, but I have no clue, who were the men behind it.
    Best wishes

    Hello Franek,
Have looked at old letters and came across the following.
    July 1999,
    From Avi,
It would now seem that there were indeed six Beaufighter.
    Five plus one.
    1 - RD135 - G-AJMB - D -170 - 22-01 - Crashed 18/11/1948.
    2 - RD448 - G-AJMC - D -171 - Shot down ? 20/10/1948. Remains now a memorial.
    3 - RD427 - G-AJMD - D -172 - 22-02 - W/O 1949.
    4 - NT929 - G-AJME - Crashed UK 28/07/1947, pilot Campbell killed.
    5 - NV306 - G-AJMF - Not purchased, used for parts.
    6 - LZ185 - G-AJMG - D-173 - for spare parts, dbr in a landing accident 22/08/1948.
Also at the time the Anson, Consul,Oxford and Mosquito identities were examined.
I have details if you would like them.

Also from Jim Halley re Confirming correct serial number dated Nov 1997.
RD427/G-AJMD while RD437 went to International Alloys. He notes that in A.J.Jackson's British Civil Aircraft Vol.1 that G-AJMD had been corrected to RD427 but not mentioned is the Israel connection, only that it had been purchased by a film company.

    Alex
