Default Is there a Hawker Archive somewhere'

Does anyone know if there is an archive somewhere for Hawker Aircraft Ltd/Hawker Siddeley Aviation, etc., and if so if they have records of past personnel?

I have a number of questions relating to the post-RAF career of George Medal holder 22199 Flt Lt Philip Gadesden LUCAS, and was hoping there may be records somewhere that might help answering them:

    • Transferred to Class A RAFO, 8 May 31
    • Test Plt, Hawker Aircraft Ltd, Brooklands, ca Jun 31
    • Chief Experimental Test Pilot, Hawker Aircraft Ltd, Brooklands, Surrey, & Langley, Bucks, dates? 1940-46
    • GM for landing a damaged Typhoon prototype, 9 May 41
    • Retired from test flying (120 types & 3,450 FH), date? 1946
    • Tech Sales Mgr, de Havilland, date? ca 1950
    • Gen Mgr, Hawker, date?; Exec Director, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, date? Aug 64
    • Died Crawley, W Sussex, 18 Dec 81

For clarity, I have seen the series on test pilots in Flight, which includes Lucas. While that article provides a broad overview of his career, which is helpful, I am trying to pin down some exact dates and movements.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hello Steve,

https://thetartanterror.blogspot.co....-lucas-gm.html (may be a rehash of the FLIGHT story)

His logbook survives, probably at Hendon: accession no. AC95/54/8.

Thanks gents, I'll check out those leads.

Hi Bruce, yes, that appears to be a re-hash of the Flight article, but I do wish people would provide their sources!

    Many thanks

    Hello Steve
Are you still researching Philip Lucas ? My father was a great friend of his at Hawkers so I have one or two letters and a few photos.
My father, Frank Murphy (ex-RNZAF 486), was seconded to Hawker Aircraft as a test pilot towards the end of the war and eventually became Chief Production Test Pilot (until 1955) - and later also a director.
    Angela Bailey (nee Murphy)

As I'm only an occasional contributor (researching my father's life etc), I'm not sure how I contact you directly. Feel free to get in touch.

We have Copies of his logbooks, 1940 - 1945, at Brooklands Museum, if you are still interested.

His GM was announced in The Times of 10th May 1941 and his obit. appeared in the same newspaper 5th January 1982.

    Hi Andy and DaveW

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the heads up Dave; I'll see if I can find the obit.

Andy, yes thanks, I would be very interested in obtaining images of the page inside the back of his logbooks showing his "Record of Service", if I may, please? This would confirm some of the dates I have and hopefully answer some of my open questions.

Does a logbook also survive for the period he was with 41 Sqn, 12 Nov 29-22 Mar 30?

I can be reached directly on brewATclientsDOTch, with AT and DOT replaced with the usual symbols.

    Thanks
    Steve
