Default Identification of a Spitfire VIII Italy summer 1944

    Hello,

I'm looking for the serial a Spitfire which crashed between Chiusi dell Verna and Bibbiena, North of Arezzo in Italy around July/August 1944, a Mk VIII. The pilot was killed in the crash.

Any idea of what Spitfire it might be?

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hello Phil,

There were several Squadrons that used the Mk.VIII in the Middle East and Italy.
    Perhaps other members could assist.

    417 Sqn - JG272 - 3/7/44
    F/O. Robert William McLAREN - J/19717 - RCAF.
I think that it was this airman and a/c you seek.

AB's "JA100-JZ999" has 4/9/44 date for the loss and NFD.

Also the CWGC have 270 airmen killed between 1st July and 31st August 1944 that are buried in Italy.

    Alex,

I suggest you take a look here, (again?):

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...O-McLaren-RCAF

Take particular note of the time of the posts of Simon and myself.

    A-B's RAF A/c JA100-JZ999 (1990), for Spitfire VIII JG272, states:

417 - Lost 4.9.44; NFD, not as quoted by you.
