    Default 417 Sqn loss 3 July 1944 - P/O McLaren RCAF

    Hello again,

In which Spitfire VIII P/O RW McLaren (J19717) was killed on 3 July 1944? In 417 ORB it is stated MT515, but this aircraft was also lost on 24 October (ORB)!! - A-B register gives also 24.10.44.

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hello,

    TSGNO/Allison & Hayward (p.502), suggests Spitfire LF.VIII JG272.

    Phil,

His R.C.A.F. records on ancestry.co.uk include a report from the R.C.A.F. Casualty Officer, dated 5/3/45, which includes the following:

B.P.O, R.A.F., B.N.A.F. reported that Spitfire aircraft JG.272, piloted by F/O R. W. McLaren, of 417 R.C.A.F. Squadron, left base at 05.35 hours on July 3rd 1944 to carry out an armed reconnaissance. Inaccurate but heavy flak encountered two or three miles SE of Sansepolcro, Italy, hit the port wing of F/O McLaren's aircraft and half of the wing was blown away. The aircraft immediately began to spin and was seen to hit the ground, explode and burst into flames. F/O McLaren was not seen to bale out.

    Regards

    Simon
