    Default OTU Loss (3rd / 4th June 1943)

I note that on 3rd / 4th June 1943, the Bomber Command Night Raid Report shows "one OTU aircraft ditched off St Catherine's Point on return owing to engine trouble; all but one of the crew were rescued".

Purely out of interest, I was trying to see if I could establish who that airman was to see if his body was recovered during the rescue attempt.

Having eliminated as many as I can, I am still left with the following airmen listed on the CWGC site for 3rd June 1943 (without a squadron number)

2421531 BANKS JACK STANDISH KIDLINGTON BURIAL GROUND
2421533 BOIRE LEO ALBERT KIDLINGTON BURIAL GROUND
2697280 BROOKE JACK ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE (HURST) CEMETERY
1530769 BUCKLEY JOHN BOWYER RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL
1530929 BURTON HOWARD FRIZELLE RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL
1085053 COTTON PAUL TEMPLE RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL
2715846 CREANEY JOHN NEW STEVENSTON (ST. PATRICK'S) ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY
    1798546 GOODHEAD JACK RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL
2716623 HOWELL JOHN HENRY ABERDARE CEMETERY, GLAMORGANSHIRE
2421543 INNES-SMITH DONALD JAMES KIDLINGTON BURIAL GROUND
2426961 MORSHEAD LESLIE ERNEST NORTH WEALD BASSETT (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD
    1804009 PAUL ERIC RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL
2434164 STATHER ARTHUR LESLIE CATERHAM AND WARLINGHAM (CATERHAM) BURIAL GROUND
2929504 WOOD RONALD CHARLES BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETERY
1532222 YAXLEY ROBERT GORDON RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL
1532276 YOUNG JOHN KENNETH RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL

    Any thoughts?

[It may be that he is listed as lost on 4th June 1943, but I thought I would try 3rd first]

    Hi Pete,

Wellington DV613 28 OTU. Nickel Op.

Only crew listed are Sgt JW Shearek (which seems to be a spelling error for "Shearer"and Sgt Broomfield (no initial, listed as suffered a broken leg).

The text states the bomber suffered an engine failure and ditched 35 miles SSE of St. Catherine's Point. "The survivors were adrift for eight hours before being picked up"

Col's post here fills in crew blanks: http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...7501&styleid=2

    Regards,

    Dave

Thanks for the feedback; I am beginning to wonder if all crew were rescued, but I will keep researching the matter until all avenues have been exhausted

    Pete,

I'm away from home at the moment and can't fully access my files. I'll check when I get back home.
