    Default No.21 Squadron

    Hi,

I have a pilot who was posted to No.21 Group as an instructor. In 1941 he received a AFC while commanding No.2 Squadron?

I am having problems trying to match No.2 Squadron to 21 Group, can anyone please advice, the info reads:

This was endorsed by the AOC, No.21 Group, on 14 January 1941:

This officer’s devotion to his flying instructional duties merits recognition. Strongly recommended.

An officer with a varied experience of service flying, has been a flying instructor for two years, latterly as Officer Commanding No.2 Squadron. His exceptional ability, both as flying instructor and an administrator, has maintained a very high standard in his squadron. His personality and splendid qualities of leadership have inspired all those under his command.

    Any help welcome.

    Steve,

Do you mean No.2 Squadron, or No.21 Squadron? If No.2 Sqn:

Due to their size, some training organizations formed numbered squadrons within the parent unit. So, there is a possibility that the No.2 Squadron could be that, and not No.II (AC) Squadron.

    Hi Steve

In 1941 No 21 Group controlled the following: -

No 2 School of Air Navigation - RAF Cranage

No 2 Central Flying School - RAF Cranwell

No 8 Service Flying Training School - RAF Montrose

No 5 Service Flying Training School - RAF Ternhill

No 11 Service Flying Training School - RAF Shawbury

No 12 Service Flying Training School - RAF Grantham

    Steve,

I take it your'e referring to 34218 W/C Royd Martin FENWICK-WILSON AFC RAF - Your site* indicates he was at 12 FTS/SFTS, Grantham.

    Ho both,

Thank you for your help. I have a copy of W/Cdr Fenwick-Wilson's log book. It does not record a No.2 Squadron only No.12 FTS/SFTS, Grantham. However on Hugh Halliday's excellent site the citation states officer commanding No.2 Squadron for those dates.

    Regards

    Steve
