    Default 754890 Sgt. J. M. Gardiner RAFVR, 1940.

    Hello,

Can anyone please help me with the first names of this pilot, and any other information on him ?

He was posted in to the newly formed 238 Squadron on 24 May 1940 but appears to have left them by the end of June 1940. In the 238 Sqn. ORB he is noted once as 'Sgt. J. Gardiner' on being posted in. He had two accidents, on June 6th in a Spitfire (no F.1180) and on June 20th in Hurricane P2979 (from the F.1180). The F.1180 for the second accident records him as 754890 Sgt. J. M. Gardiner RAFVR' with only 9 hours experience on Hurricanes to that point. He was not the only 238 Sqn. pilot to have two accidents around this time, but he may have been sent back to a training unit for further experience.

Here is my difficulty. He survived the war, does not appear to have been a POW in any theatre of war and was not commissioned or decorated. He does not appear in 'MEN OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN' (2015) by KG Wynn. He was not subsequently an ace nor did he claim two or more aerial victories (Shores). No AIR 81 casualty file was produced for either of his June 1940 accidents as he was not hurt. I cannot find him on the online 'FLIGHT' archives and Googling him does not help.
Perhaps most surprisingly he does not seem to be in the AIR 78 enlisted personnel name cards. I have just gone through some 450 pages of these; trying Gardiner/Gardener/Gardner. All to no avail. The nearest I could come up with was '744290 J. W. Gardner', but he likewise is not to be found in any of the sources mentioned above.

The name as given on the F.1180 is quite accurate looking, so it cannot have been too different if at all. He should be easy to find but......! Having gone this far I would really like to find his full name, or even confirm that he was in fact 744290 J.W. Gardner.

Can someone help solve this little mystery please ?

    Regards,

    Martin Gleeson.

J.M. Gardiner (754890) was with 5 OTU in October 1940 before being posted to 32 Squadron on the 18th. He joined 229 Squadron on December 4th and 145 Squadron on December 23rd but disappears from the 145 Squadron ORB after Januar 19th 1941.

    John,

Thank you very much for that remarkable detail. It certainly proves he was the pilot with 238 Squadron in June 1940 and that his service number and initials are correct.

    Regards and thanks once more,

    Martin.

    Paul,

Thanks for the great work. I have checked the 'John Gardiner' section of AIR 78 again to no avail. His card is probably misfiled somewhere else, I hope I come across it while looking for another airman !

    Regards,

    Martin.

    This is I believe
John Michael Gardiner who died in 2003 at Medway, Kent, England

    First Officer John M Gardiner

Could be John Muir Gardiner (born 1929 in Madras India) who was in RAF in 1950's Service Number 2600494
He has a Royal Aero Club Aviators Certificate on Ancestry but number is not visible to me

There is a Cert Number # 27,800 issued in 1952 to J M Gardiner from RAF Cottesmore - I think it may be same guy as John Muir Gardiner above.. If so he is to young to be the 1940 John M Gardiner

There is a John Muir Gardiner in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as temp Lt in 1945

There is a John McMeans Gardiner Born 1918 Died 2003 in Glasgow Scotland

And at least one other JOHN MUIR GARDINER in Scotland for 1918 -There are two on Scotlands People but may be same person as one registered Muirkirk the other Greenock East

And others in aged bracket in Scotland
    JOHN MILLER GARDINER 1921 Falkirk
    JOHN MCDONALD GARDINER 1922 Larkhall

OK That Service number 'nearby numbers'

If you note 754893 Sgt. RONALD Little joined 24 May 1940 238 Sqn same day (tis is from Wynn MoBoB) and his dates seem to fit with Gardiner - So I wonder if he also on same
