    Default Missing RAF Bases information

    Hi

I hope someone can help by adding some location detail for me. Going through my father's log book, I find the following postings, but I can't confirm the locations

    • 38 Squadron MEF14/8/1942
    • No5 METS 1/11/942 to 30/11/1942
    • 38 Squadron MEF30/11/1942
    • 38 Squadron Detached Benghazi 26/12/1942 to 30/1/1943
    • No5 METS ASV12/2/943 to 16/2/1943

I believe that the 38 Squadron may have been to Shallufa.

He also recorded a list of airfields (approx. 70) that he visited, and again I'm trying to map them. So far I have most, but I'm missing a few

    • Babbacombe
    • Berka Satellite
    • Berka Satellite 2
    • Leighton Buzzard

The last one was a flight after the end of the war in 1945. As an ex POW (Stalag Luft lll) he was apparently flown from Brussels to Leighton Buzzard.

Finally I'm trying to place an airfield in Heraklion and 2 in Athens.

The plane he was piloting was shot down off Heraklion, and he was captured and hospitalised there before being flown from an airfield in
Heraklion to one in Athens. Subsequently after further hospital treatment he was flown from a second Athens airfield to Brindisi (which I have found).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi Colin

Babbacombe wasn't an airfield it was the location of an Initial Training Wing.

Leighton Buzzard also wasn't an airfield but a Communications Centre and HQ of No 26 Group

    Colin, Hi,

38 Sqn based in the Middle East flying Wellingtons in various roles (see Malcolm’s RAFWEB for the details).

5 METS (Middle East Training School). Mostly based at RAF Shallufa. Egypt (GE 30.042174 32.474347?) in 205 Group.

Benghazi. RAF Benina (GE 32.086458 20.265976). An appalling place (been there!).

Babbacombe - RAF Torquay. Personnel 'processing' centre using the hotels as accommodation!

Berka 1, 2, and 3. A collection of temporary airfields, or landing strips, in the Benghazi area (probably appalling places).

RAF Leighton Buzzard – no airfield. Several RAF Signals Centres based there (nearest possible airfield RAF Wing)

    Heraklion (GE 35.339608 25.177740).

Thanks. The bit about Babbacombe makes sense. He was posted there for two weeks just shortly after joining up, so he was not flying at that time.

All I discovered about LB also said there was no airfield there. But he has entered in two separate places in his log book that he flew to there. May 11th 1945 in a C47. Brussels to Leighton Buzzard.

    Strange!

    Thanks anyway.

That's great, I didn't know if the 5 METS was a Shallufa based posting.

Pretty sure for those of us brought up post-war, most of these postings would have been awful. Not sure I'd have coped. I think those that did are heroes all!

Thanks that confirms what I suspected. Just wasn't sure if there were more fields there.
