Thread: Eric Erskine Campbell TUFNELL

    Default Eric Erskine Campbell TUFNELL

Eric Erskine Campbell TUFNELL was a sailor, regular RN officer, who was 'on loan' to the RAF from 1918 (I believe) until his retirement in 1924 (possibly a little later). Does anyone know anything about his service? According to one source he qualified as an observer and did a course on photography during his RAF time.

    Thanks in advance.

    Bruce,
His Service Record (with dates/locs) is on Find My Past - together with yards of other stuff!

Thank you both. I will trawl the Find My Past records.
Paul, that bio from the auction house in your link is excellent and I have no idea why my hours on Google failed to find it. I found others but this one includes some first hand information.

I am still hoping he left a mark during his time with the RAF. He was decorated by the Greeks in his RAF years and there has to be a story there.

    Regards,
    Bruce

Thanks Col, that helps. I think photography was part of the observers course in your post, but I suspect he was involved in some airborne snooping prior to that date.

Seems my man Tufnell had other strings to his bow:

"In 1938 he was recalled to the navy to carry out meteorological work in Colombo."

Has anybody seen Met connections during his RAF time?
