    Interesting conflicting info about 1678/1679. Griffin's first book lists SW for 1679, "British Aircraft Markings" by Roberston agrees that SW was used by 1678. There was probably a lot of swapping of aircraft, without the markings being updated right away. To quote from a recent post on another forum, what we need is a time machine.

    Hello,
    For what it's worth, these are from my files on Lancasters that were originally taken from the books I had on Lancasters.
    1651 = BS
    a/c PB749;NG270;ED413;ME325;ME781;JB699;ND387;PB871;HK 655;ED631.

    1653 = A3 and H4
    a/c DV161;NE132;PD431;ND647;LM719;HK703;NG118;NN813;NG 437;LM524.

    1657 = Nil Code
    a/c DS603

    1678 = SW
    a/c DS606;DS670;DS653

    1679 = Nil Code
    a/c DS635;DS649;DS615;DS624;DS839;DS607.

    All the best
    Alex

    Thanks Pavel (and to all that responded!), I forgot 1655 HCU on my list, would you be able to tell me what the codes for it were?

    Thanks!

    Matt,
    According to Chorley Vol 8 "HCU and Miscellaneous Unit losses 1939 - 1947", there wasn't such a thing as 1655 HCU. Page 238 lists a 1655 MCU based at Marham, Norfolk, followed by a 1655 MTU, the latter also at Warboys, Wyton and Upper Heyford. From another source, I believe the squadron code to be "QF" but I woudn't put my month's salary on it!
    Regards
    Max

    Default 1679 HC Flt

    Whilst somewhat of a technicality did 1679 HCU ever exist ? Or was it known as 1679 H C Flt before being combined into 1666 HCU.

    regards Rich Allenby
