    Default 569643 Cpl Eric John Datson, RAF

    This man is a last minute addition for Vol Three of my 'For Your Tomorrow'. Would anyone have a record of his last unit (or any others) or his place of birth (CWGC says he was age 23, also gives Mr H Mitchell of Dartford, Kent as a grandfather)?

    DATSON, Corporal Eric John. 569643;
    b [England?] c.1918-1919;
    to NZ in ?;
    Raetihi Sch;
    to UK c.1935.
    RAF Halton/1SoTT as Aircraft Apprentice c.14 Jan 36,
    [postings wanting],
    died 16 Feb 42.
    Singapore Memorial Column 415. Son of John Harold & Dorothy Datson, Levin.

    Many thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

    Hi Errol, just a bit of simple information for you from the Births index on ancestry - Eric J Datson was born first quarter of 1919 and registered under Dartford. Mothers maiden name is stated as Mitchell.

    Thats all i can offer!

    Cheers, Tom

    Errol, give me an hour and i'll check the 100 Sqn ORB for you - his date of death and memorial location fit in with him being a "100" man.

    Errol, i've gone back to the end of 1940 in the 100 Sqn ORB, and your man isn't mentioned in there at all i'm afraid. That said, the ORB for the period isn't partcularly detailed, and the PORs for the period tend to concentrate on the Officers, rather than the "rankers".

    I'm at Kew next month to look at the 36 Squadron ORB as well as the Seletar station ORB. If your deadline is beyond about the third week of January, i'll gladly keep my eyes open for him and let you know if i find his name in either of those two documents.

    All the best as always,

    L/O

    P.S. Now we have a Kiwi Coach, do you think we'll give your boys a run for your money the next time we play you??!

    I hope this is the correct man but the GRO RAF Deaths register on findmypast database says he was with 307 AMES??

    I've placed the page here
    www.skynet.ie/~dan/temp/datson.pdf

    Not sure how much that helps.

    It looks as though Dennis has identified my man's unit as 307 AMES. Could explain why he's not found in your ORB!

    The Wallabys have just appointed New Zealand's best coach, my province Canterbury's and the Super 12/14 'Crusaders' Robbie Deans (the first time they've gone for a non-Aussie), leaving us with Henry...again. I wonder which Kiwi coached team will win the WRC in 2011?!

    Thanks Dennis.

    I'm certain that this is my man, all right. Looks as though he was engaged on radar duties. His death may relate to the fall of Singapore the day before. Next step is to discover where 307 AMES was stationed at the time.
