Default Beaufighter claim Med. 17 April 1943

    Dear all,

This weekend, I was contacted by the next-of-kin of Oblt. Gerhard Pajung, a pilot of 2./NJG2. This night fighter pilot was shot down and killed during a daylight convoy escort patrol over the Med. in combat with Beaufighters on 17 April 1943. Reportedly, the Ju88 C-6 of Oblt. Pajung crashed into the Mediterranean Sea at 13.00 hrs on 17 April 43 to the North of Cap Bon with the loss of the three-man crew. The relatives of Oblt. Pajung would dearly like to know the identity of the Beaufighter crew who shot down Pajung, who can help with a combat report and/or other info??

    Many thanks, Theo Boiten (theoboitenATversatel.nl)

    Theo,

Found that F/L Rodney Phipps (RCAF) of 272 Squadron claimed a Ju 88 "probably destroyed" off Cap Bon on 17.4.1943. Beaufighter Vc was EL274/T.

    Hi Leendert,

Many thanks for your interesting reply! It would be interesting to see if the Combat Report for this claim mentions the time when the Ju88 was probably shot down, to see if this matches with the loss time quoted in the German report. And did the Beaufighter claimant survive the war?

    Cheers, Theo

    Theo,

That's all the info I could find. Phipps however died in Calgary on 28 September 1965.

    Groet,

    Leendert

    Hi Leendert,

Many thanks for the additional info -I've passed this on to the family of the Ju88 pilot and I can tell you that it has been gratefully accepted.

    Cheers, Theo

    Hallo Theo,

Sorry to be late with this reply. Are you sure it was a Beaufighter that shot down Pajung ? I ask because USAAF P-38s are also a strong contender in my opinion. There are two separate actions to be considered.

Lightning pilots of the 94th FS, 1st FG claimed among other victories 3 Ju 88s destroyed and 3 more damaged at c.1300 hours this day while on a B-17 escort mission. Frank Olynyk's book on the USAAF aerial victory credits in the MTO gives the location as Palermo.

The above work and ADORIMINI (A history of the 82nd FG in WW2) both state that 82nd FG pilots claimed a Ju 88 (to Major Harley C. Vaughn, CO of the 96th FS) and 4 Fiat BR 20s near Zembra Island at 1540 hours. Zembra is near Cape Bon but west or north-west of it.

    Regards,

    Martin Gleeson.
