    Default RAF Levies

Can anyone tell me what was the role of 1st Battalion RAF Levies, who were based at RAF Habbaniya Iraq in 1942.
They were the guys with big stetson type hats with white plumes.

    I`ve searched around without success.

The Battalion was essentially base security. The Assyrians provided perimeter and aircraft security, upto to the Iraqi uprising. Once the base came under attack they were the ground troops that supplemented the RAF personnel, especially the Armoured Cars, in defending the base, and then attacking and taking over the heights overlooking the base and which was being used to bombard the base. After the siege was lifted, thousands more recruited, and used as ground troops across Iraq and ME. It should be remembered that the Levies also consisted of Kurds. Both fought well because of their hatred and mistrust of the Iraqis, not surprising considering how thousands had been massacred in the 30s.
