OK Steve I've been back to the 11 Group ORB which sadly becomes less than helpful for 1945. During 1944 the Monthly Appendices include a Daily Activity Synopsis often 7 or 8 pages, or more, of substantial detail including listing all the squadrons and their aircraft types providing RAMROD escorts. For reasons that are not apparent this all changes in January 1945 Form 540 records are much more abbreviated and it appears the Daily Activity Synopsis was either no longer completed or it has not been preserved in the ORB and Appendices. It may be that it was merged with a Fighter Command document but I did not have the opportunity to pursue that.

The 11 Group Form 540 does confirm that Spitfires continued to form part of the escort force through to the end of April 1945 but the record does not provide any details of the squadrons. In the absence of some kind of summary document it seems the detail can only be confirmed through individual squadron ORBs. However where it is often the case that escort was provided by "7 squadrons of Spitfires" or even "9 squadrons of Spitfires" it seems likely that the Spitfires came from 2TAF.

    Thanks Steve

I cannot seriously see a mix of 2TAF and FC squadrons providing day escort, especially as 2TAF were fully engaged in their own day-to-day role and FC squadrons would be under 11 or 12 Group control and on different frequencies to Kenway (83Group) and Longbow (84 Group) squadrons.
