Default One for the Lancaster experts

I have a movement card that shows a Lancaster MKI .... "converted to a Mark III"

My understanding, rightly or wrongly, is that the MKIII was identical to the MKI, except it had Merlin engines built by Packard in the USA.

The card states that it had Merlin 22 engines ..... so does this mean that they would have been replaced with Packard built engines .... and if so, why?

The aircraft in question is ME620, with the conversion carried out sometime during the 1st Quarter 1944 [Note: If anyone has the movement card for this aircraft it states "PTO", and I haven't got the back .... so there may be something written to explain the conversion]

Any thoughts would be very welcome

    Regards

    Pete
