Default P/O Denis Carbutt KIA 54303

    Dear All,

I'm trying to get to the bottom of the identity of Pilot Officer Denis Carbutt who was killed in action as the second pilot of Lancaster DV397.

I know he was commissioned in 1944 (LG 28/03/1944), with his number changing form 565881 to 54303, and I am wondering if he is the same D Carbutt who served with 82 Squadron in 1940.

Obviously the D Carbutt KIA in 1944 was a pilot, while the D Carbutt who served with 82 Squadron was a navigator, but he could have retrained as lots of aircrew did.

The D Carbutt of 82 Squadron was in L8858 with Morrison and Cleary when they were the only aircraft to return from the Gembloux Raid on the 17th May 1940, and also survived being shot down in P6925 on the 13th June 1940 and evaded capture. His original number would also suggest an inter-war enlistment.

Any help to confirm (or disprove) that the two are one and the same would be great.

    Johnnie

As far as I can see there is only a one card for a D Carbutt, and that is for Denis Carbutt, 565881.

There is no mention of his later officer number (54303), so is D Carbutt of 82 Squadron the same Denis Carbutt KIA in 1944?

If there are no other D or Davids or Dennis etc..
Then it would seem 'likely' they are same man.

Best way to find out... get a page of AiR81 report

The name Denis Carbutt is the only male D Carbutt registered in England and Wales between 1895 and 1941.!!
