    Default 21 OTU crash 1 May 1943

The OTU losses book records Wellington N2847 crashing 1.5.43 and burning out, but only records two crew P/O PJ Temple and Sgt RE Hayward, clearly it would not be normal for a Wellington to undertake a training flight with just two crew. Can anyone help here with this one, I have a possible connection to an injured airman going to RAF Hospital Horton the day of the crash but cant connect because only two crew are mentioned.

Thanks for looking at this one for me...

Hi Colin, I have only find what you have already:

1st May 1943: Vickers Wellington Mk 1c N2847 of 21 Operational Training Unit took off from RAF Enstone on a night training exercise. The aircraft suffered a hydraulic failure and landed back at the airfield at 0230, without flaps working and bounced, crashed and was destroyed by fire. Pilot Officer F. Temple and Sergeant R. Hayward were injured.

But from the text I would understand that there was a full crew going for the night training flight but only two of them were injured during the landing or subsequent fire, while the rest of crew was safe.

This is very problem that we are now able to find out historical records about those who got killed or were injured but not about those who were with them and survived.

    Sorry I cannot help more
