Default 225 ORB Record of Events 1941 and 1942

    All

On the National Archive Website the Record of Events for Dec 1941 and the whole of 1942 are missing -

Does anyone know if they exist and just were not scanned - or lost ?

    Many Thanks

Paul I have a copy of Form 540 for the period May to October 1942 taken off the microfilm reader so the record does exist.

    Steve,
I ask for the original paper copies and see what happens.

I have seen the original and it is identical to the digitised version, form 540 Summary of Events. The 541 Record of Events is not present. AIR27/1400 is appendices for 225 and has a lot of detail but does not include the 541s.

Paul, I can send PDFs of ORB form 540 (AIR27/1395) and Appendices (AIR27/1400) for this period if you don't already have them.

I thought I was confused about Paul's original question and now I know I am confused.

I work on "Summary of Events" Form 540 and "Detail of Work Carried Out" Form 541. It has always been my understanding that Form 541 records operational flying although I have encountered several ORBs that record non-operational flying on Form 541. I said earlier I have Form 540 for May to Oct 1942 I would not expect to find Form 541 for that period because there was NO operational flying. I believe that would also be the case for the period Dec41 to Apr42 but I don't have the documents. At the end of Oct42 225Sqn left Britain for the Torch landings.

The Form 540 that I have for May to Oct42 is very detailed and seems to include details of ALL non-operational flying.

    Hi Steve,
The Form 541 was the 'Record of Events' and as far as I have ever known was not 'conditional': it wasn't used under certain conditions and then taken out of use when circumstances changed. Again, as far as I know but I stand to be corrected, the Forms 540 and 541 were the required records to be kept by any body within the RAF that was deemed to be a 'unit', i.e. a recognised entity in the command structure. So a group, a squadron, a regiment or a wing would all use the same two forms to record their activity and between them they formed the ORB.

Anything that was attached to the ORB was an appendix. The appendices for 225, in AIR27/1400, are quite rich in detail, which is not always the case, and if they might help I can send them to you. Do you have the AIR27/1395 ORB?
