Default Flt Lts Henry Lacy Smith and William James Smith (RAAF)

I've just come across a couple of Australian airmen (not related) who've had their names removed from the Runnymede Memorial. They are

Flt Lt Henry Lacy Smith (unit unknown) now buried in Ranville War Cemetery
Flt Lt William James Smith (457SQN) now buried in Cassel Communal Cemetery Extension

Does anyone have any information about their removal from Runnymede? Obviously their remains were identified after the aircraft they were in was found but I have no details of these at all. Can anyone assist? TIA

    Hi Dean,

Sgt. William James Smith, (400942), 457 Squadron

… His remains were discovered in northern France in October 2011 by a British film crew making a documentary about the Second World War…

    Dean,

Re: Henry Lacy Smith. I recommend you read the following book:

On Laughter-Silvered Wings: A Biography of Henry Lacy Smith,
    Batchelder,Alf,
    Canberra:Air Power Development Centre,2015

It might even be downloadable. Try:

    http://airpower.airforce.gov.au/Publ...Silvered-Wings

It will tell you most of what you need to know about HLS (His Life, Loves, Loss and Recovery).
