    Default Flight Sergeant W.T.C. Morman

A friend is looking after some graves in a church in Guiting Power in Gloucestershire. One of the graves concerned is that of "560125 Flight Sergeant W.T.C. Morman, Pilot, Royal Air Force, 16th October 1940, Age 30".

Does anyone here have any background to this pilot's service?

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Hi Phil
CWGC records that he was Mentioned in Despatches(no date given), this might be traceable via the London Gazette. His age is given as 30 , his parents were William Percival Stevens Morman and Kate Amelia Mormon. His wife was Elizabeth Marjorie Morman who came from the village where he is buried and this explains why he is buried there when he died in Cheshire, as his death was registered at the Wirral Register Office. The CWGC entry does not give a unit and his name does not come in the books recording losses for Bomber, Coastal or Fighter Command. It could be that he was on a rest tour. The Wirral Office covers places like Birkenhead, Wallasey and the docks opposite Liverpool so if he didn't crash in the area he could have been victim of an Air Raid or other accident.

I've on file that he was killed on Henley TT.1 of 1 AACU; crashed in Liverpool Bay due to engine problems.

    Hi Phil
A crash into Liverpool Bay could have resulted in a registration at Wirral

    Phil,

His service number 560125 tells me he was a Halton Apprentice enlisting in the RAF around 1925/26 ! Age 15 ?

Also according to my copy of the India General Service Medal Roll 1908-1935
    To the RAF :-

Morman W.T.C Sgt 560126 Clasp - North West Frontier 1935
+ Awarded India General Service Medal 1936-1939 Clasp North West Frontier 1936-37
Also noted as Deceased so I am presuming he didn't live to receive his India General Service Medal 1936-39 ?

    Phil,

Checking London Gazette website with a search - 560125 - came up

Mention in Despatches - For Waziristan North West Frontier India 16-12-1937 - 31-12-1938

    RAF
MORMAN No 560125 Flight Sergeant W.T.C

    Gazette Issue 34712 Page3 17/10/1939

More and more interesting. His M.I.D emblem would of been worn on his India General Service medal 1936-1939 ribbon !

    Mark
