L.A.C. Charles Richard Dickie of Canning, Kings County, Nova Scotia, were killed in Fleet Finch Mk. II s/n 4441
after they had a mid-air collision with Fleet Finch Mk. II s/n 4448 during approach to landing at Malton airport.

During the coroner's jury inquiry, held under direction of Dr. J. M. Hourigan, another flying club in structor, W. A. Snider,
testified that the crash occurred when the "ceiling" dropped fom 3,000 to 500 feet

George John Isiah Clarke and
Pilot-Officer Alfred Peter Nurdett Hordern — was granted by
Mr. Justice Nicholas in the Equity
Court to-day.
Clarke was killed in the battle of
Dakar, where, according to a letter
received by his widow from the com
manding officer of HMAS. Australia. he displayed great gallantry and
did much to prevent severe damage
to the shin, to which he was attached
as a member of the Fleet Air arm.

Hordern flew out over the North
Sea while on patrol duty with the
Royal Air Force on Anzac Day, 1940,
and never returned.

Clarke's widow. Ellen Elizabeth Hope
Clarke, of Burlington Road, Strath
field. in an affidavit, said she mar
ried her husband In 1935. and there
were two children.
After thev were married they lived
at Salamau, New Guinea, where her
husband was a pilot employed by W.
R. Carpenter and Co. Ltd. Later they
lived in Sydney, her husband being
a commercial pilot flving between
Sydney and New Guinea.
On the outbreak of war her hus
band. who was on the reserve of offi
cers Joined the R.A.A.F. nnd was at
tached to H.M.A.S. Australia as a
member of the Fleet Air Arm.
Some Survivors
Prior to last Christmas she received
a letter from the Commanding Offi
cer of H.M.A-S. Australia, reading:
'It is with deepest sympathy and
regret that I write to tell you that
there is really no hope that your hus
band could have survived. I have
made every possible inquiry and have
now received definite evidence that,
though there are some survivors of
the other aircraft, our brave ship
mates are not among them.
'Our aircraft was spotting for our
gunfire when we were in action, and
the devotion to duty of its crew was
a contributing cause of this ship
coming off comparatively lightly from
the enemy gunfire.
'Towards the end of the action our
aircraft was observed to be falling
out of control as a result of an
attack from an enemy fighter.
'Two of the crew made parachute
descents, but it was impossible for
the ship to get near the position. Your
husband was, I fear, killed in the
air.'
The affidavit of Mrs. Doris Phyllis
Truman, of Kurraba Road. Neutral
Bay. mother of the late Pilot-Officer
Hordern, stated that her son was re
ported missing as a result of air
operations on April 25, 1940.
Hordern was 20 years of age when
he left Australia in 1938 to join the
R.A.F. in England. ?
