Default 77457 P/O Ronald Billings RAFVR 220 Squadron

I am researching the service of an uncle, Ronald Billings, born Newcastle-under-Lyme, 1916, who was involved with Hudson N7233 which crashed on take off from Thornaby 15/9/40, the pilot P/O J I Humphries was killed. Any information about the career of Ron Billings gratefully appreciated. Regards, Roger Billings.

    Hi Roger,

    welcome aboard.
I think it would be worth to get his service record (if you have not done it already):
    https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military...-elses-records

The other good source would be the squadron ORB (if your uncle was member of flying staff) which you can preview only and then study on-site or buy in PDF format online:

    220 Sq ORB:

220 Sq ORB Sep 1940 F540 where the incident is mentioned:

    Hi,

Checking the book 'The Air Efficiency Award 1942-2005 Christopher Brooks

77457 Acting Squadron Leader R. Billings RAFVR - Awarded Air Efficiency Award 21-6-1945
Clasp awarded 7-12-1960 - So he served post-war in the RAFVR, serving over ten years to be awarded the clasp.

I also have a note mentioning he enlisted as Sgt Pilot 742221 RAFVR around October 1938 !
