Default Mustang AG389 shot down by Typhoon 20/1/43

    Hi guys

I should know this but I can't find my relevant file!

Sadly the RCAF Mustang pilot was killed in the incident, which occurred off the Isle of Wight during a JG26 fighter-bomber raid.

I now seek the identity of the errant Typhoon pilot and his squadron.

    Cheers
    Brian

Ferris was the Mustang pilot. His R.C.A.F. records include some details of the proceedings of the Court of Inquiry, and identify the Typhoon as Typhoon Ib R8781 of 486 (NZ) sqn, flown by F/O J. H. McCaw.

The court found McCaw to blame, but no disciplinary action was recommended due to mitigating circumstances: his inexperience; the failure of his R/T; and the fact that a second Mustang got onto his tail, making McCaw assume it was an enemy aircraft going to attack him, causing him to panic.

    Regards

    Simon
