    Default P/O John Goodrich HEATHERINGTON 106524, d. December 26th 1941

    Hello again everyone

Just doing some tidying up of my files, and I came across a query for 106524 Pilot Officer John Goodrich Heatherington, died December 26th 1941, and commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. I seem to have him listed as being with 13 O.T.U., but I haven't made a note of where that came from.

I can't seem to find him in Dennis' Flight Magazine casualty lists, and he's not on the 'Unnaccounted Airmen' lists.

I'm sure the surname spelling is correct, as I have found his birth registered Weardale, December 1920.

Can anyone help with any details of his unit and the cause of his loss?

    Regards

    Simon

    Hi Simon,
According to Chorley’s book there was a Blenheim P4856 was lost with 13 OTU on that date but your man is not on that crew which was

    Sgt W F Boggs RCAF +
    Sgt F R Morris+
    Sgt J W Kennedy +

Your man is not listed in Chorley’s Roll of Honour for 1941 either.

    Cheers,

    John.

    Thanks John.

I remembered where 13 O.T.U. came from - he's recorded on the GRO War Deaths Royal Air Force All Ranks Indexes 1939-1948 as being with 13 O.T.U..

I checked Boggs RCAF service file on ancestry and there was barely mention of the cause of death, and no Form 765 or 412, etc. no narrative, nothing. just an individual casualty report.

Found Heatherington on the same page as Boggs but in the previous casualty report

    Scanning OCR mis read problem

DIED OF WOUNDS OR INJURIES RECEIVED IN
    ACTION.—Sgt. R. W. Fornian;, P/O. J. G.
    lleatiierington; Sgt. R. II. .1. Winter. .

See the top left of the page
    https://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarch...l?search=Boggs
And note he is listed as In action, but known to have died, not missing. And with his Runnymede panel number being low, it not likely a case of a lost grave they couldn't find postwar. AIR81 ought to clear it up in a few months time.

Many thanks for finding him Dennis.

Hopefully as you say all will become clear when the relevant tranche of Air 81 is released.

Found him, in Bomber Command Losses, Middle East and Mediterranean, Volume 1:

    Blenheim IV Z7972
    O.A.D.U.
    Delivery Flight

After take off from Gibraltar for Malta, an engine cut and the aircraft ditched 7.5 km east of Gibraltar. P/O Heatherington is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
    Sgt G R Wallace RCAF – injured
    P/O J G Heatherington – killed
    Sgt G T Weston – injured

    Regards
