    Default GARBUTT, Sydney Francis FX582101, F.A.A., k.i.f.a.. 16 August 1944, Canada

    Hello everyone

The above Leading Airman of the Royal Navy was killed in an aircraft accident whilst training in Canada. There is a page on findagrave.com with full details of his last flight, but no ID for the aircraft involved:

    https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/95305197

Is it possible to get an ID for the trainer involved?

    Regards

    Simon

    Hello,

    Possibly:

Harvard IIB 3315, of 31 SFTS, Kingston/14 SFTS, Aylmer, Ontario, which was involved in a Cat "A" accident on 16/08/1944. It was struck off Charge 15/09/1944.

Thanks for reminding me of Bill's website. Sounds like Harvard 3315 may be a distinct possibility.

EDIT: I've just come across this page:

    August 16, 1944
    Gananoque Airport

A/LA Sydney Garbutt, age 18, was killed when his Harvard crashed shortly after taking off.

I thought I posted this earlier.

Ancestry.com has contemporary CWGC burial ledgers scanned that confirm 3315.

The accident report for Harvard 3315 is available on line at the link below and confirms that Sydney Francis Garbutt was the Pilot.
