    Default 802 Squadron FAA ORB

    Hi all

I'm struggling to find an ORB for 802 Sqn FAA for the pre-war period (1935, to be precise) in the NA records search on their website.

Can anyone shed any light? Have they survived?

I'm trying to establish when 33113 Plt Off Alan Frederick HARDS joined the unit aboard HMS 'Glorious' in ca Jul/Aug 1935.

    Thanks
    Steve

The Squadron Diaries in ADM 207 seem to be later in the war so not much good for your purposes. I did check AIR 27/2387 which seemed to include FAA pre-war entries but the 802 Sqn entries appear to start in 1938. That file contains a number of FAA units from the late thirties and early war but they seem to be limited in time span. I seem to recall a comment somewhere that many FAA records were destroyed, the reason for which did not store itself in my memory. This may explain the oddities in AIR 27/2387.

Have you tried the Fleet Air Arm Museum?

Many thanks PNK; that's frustrating but thanks for taking the time to respond.

    Hi Steve,

I remember trying to dig up FAA records some years ago with a distinct lack of success. I have been going through my emails but can't find anything, so I suspect I must have actually spoken to someone at the FAA museum directly. My recollection is that I was told 'Most FAA Squadron records stayed with the ship' and weren't gathered up/reported centrally the same way RAF Squadron records were. Hence many of them are missing from the 'official' archives unless someone made an effort to preserve them when the ships were paid off.

I was about to suggest giving the FAA Museum a call, but having just checked their website they are not longer taking queries

If you can find an association for HMS Glorious, it might be worth asking them if they have anything?

Thanks RecklessRat, I appreciate the additional information.

The alternative is a search of the unit or man's name in the Flight archive, but I've drawn a blank there, too :-(
