Default Not Strictly RAF Commands: But RAN MB 326H Macchi N14-078 28/04/71 Loss

    All
Trying to ID the full crew of this

    28/04/71
    MB 326H Macchi,
    Serial N14-078
    VC 724 Squadron
Lieut (P) Errol Martin ‘Klump’ Kavanagh # O2094,
    Lieut (P) P. Clarke
    Near Sussex Inlet, NSW
Control lost during inverted spin over sea, crew ejected with only minor injuries.

Kavanagh killed Accidental (air crash), Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, 13 March 1993, aged 48 years MiG 15. Also killed was passenged Michael Maughan

P Clarke is listed on Martin Baker Australian Ejection list. Along with many others including "2 Austrians in 1968 :-)" but I digress..

Can anyone ID Lieut (P) P. Clarke ?

He may be O2777 Lieutenant Commander Peter Lloyd Clark DFC who Died 24 Nov 2006 later Commanding officer of VC 724 Squadron and ex Vietnam Helicopter and Skyhawk Pilot

    Thanks

If you have seen two Austrians on a Martin Baker Australian Ejection List - Well.... They had no connection with Australia, Air Force, or otherwise - Go to 5C-YS 04.10.1968:

    Hi Paul,
AWM has a video on the crash, it does list Lt's Kavanagh amd Clarke as having ejected, bit more diging required.

Yes I looks like someone has made the elementary error of confusing Australia with Austria!!!

    Paul,

    I have a complete(?) listing of Martin-Baker ejections from 30.5.49 (No.1), to 26.1.96 (No.6502).

The basic problem with the Austrian Air Force loss is in the listing. It is listed as follows:

    Number 2277 - 04.10.68 - H Bruckner - AusAF - Vamp(ire) - OC (Other Cause)
    Number 2278 - 04.10.68 - H Witeschnik - AusAF - Vamp(ire) - OC (Other Cause)

In the listing of "Forces" (on p.253), the following abbreviation is used for the Royal Australian Air Force - AusAF. There is no listing at all for the Austrian Air Force!

The listing of Martin-Baker ejections can be found in the following publication:

Sir James Martin The authorised biography of the Martin-Baker ejection seat pioneer.
    Sharman,Sarah.
    Sparkford:Patrick Stephens Ltd.,1996.
pp.252-98 (Appendix Four - Emergency Ejections).

Incidentally, the listing for the 28.4.71 ejections, are as follows (p.275):

    Number 3036 - 28.4.71 - LT P. Clarke (wrong) - Aus N(avy) - MB326 - OC (Other Cause)
    Number 3038 - 28.4.71 - LT E Kavanagh (incomplete) - Aus N(avy) - MB326 - OC (Other Cause)

    here are the individuals involved:

    Paul,

For A32427 Sgt Bruce Lachlan THOMSON RAAF - there is no listing for him in the Martin-Baker Ejection Listing. No idea why, as Thomson is known to have ejected from No.77 Sqn RAAF Meteor Mk.8. A77-29 (and became a POW), on 1 December, 1951. O32427 P/O Bruce Lachlan THOMSON RAAF, along with A50141 Probationary Naval Airman Keith Birch Roberts RAN, were both killed on 9 June, 1955, when 1 AFTS Wirraway A29-142 crashed into Port Phillip Bay, 5m south of the mouth of the Werribee River, Victoria.

    See: http://www.koreanroll.gov.au/veteran.aspx?id=1213416

For Trainee Pilot Robert Allan - there is no listing in the Martin-Baker Ejection list. No idea why. From an alternate source*, I have the following:

Ejection No.62 - 19 July 1979 - Trainee Pilot Robert Allan - Macchi near Pearce R.A.A.F. Base W.A. A/c out of control. Eject Martin Baker, landed safely.

    *
    Ripcord Australia.
    Johnson W. W.
    Eastwood:A.C.P.A.,1984.
    p.162 (Post-War Australian Emergency Descents).

For Atkins/Richardson, the Martin-Baker Ejection List has the following (p.293):

    Number 5811 - 05.04.88 - S/L F. L. Atkins - AusAF - MB326 - (Cause) Not Known.

    Number 5812 - 05.04.88 - A Richardson - AusAF - MB326 - (Cause) Not Known.

The Ripcord Australia listing finishes on 27 May, 1985. So no coverage of Atkins/Richardson.

I haven't done any detailed research on any of these incidents, I'm only quoting the literature/sources immediately available to me.
