The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail of June 4th 1947 reported the following:

RAF MESS FIRE

Local Man Believed a Victim

One of the two unidentifiable bodies recovered from the wreckage of a fire in a R.A.F. officers’ mess at Iwakuni, Japan, is believed to be that of a Hartlepool man – Pilot Officer Harold Myers (28), whose wife lives at 125 Studley Road.

Mrs. Myers received notification from the Air Ministry on May 26, that her husband was posted as “missing, presumed killed,” and on June 2 she received further communication stating that Pilot Officer Myers and another officer were missing from a roll call immediately after the Iwakuni fire and that circumstances suggested they had been victims of the blaze.
Pilot Officer and Mrs. Myers have been married two years and Mrs. Myers had recently made all arrangements to join her husband in Japan.


The National Probate Calendar entry for Chudleigh records that he died at Iwakuni, and a family tree on ancestry.co.uk has a copy of a newspaper clipping dated May 31st 1947 reporting that he was believed to be the second officer killed in the fire.
