Default Combat Report - "red" or "rear" quarter

    Hi all,

while reading several combat reports available in the TNA I came across the expression "E/A seen on red quarter". But I am not able to find out what position was "red quarter". Other combats reports use only expression "rear quarter". As the combat report in questing has been compiled at 311 Sq, I have suspicion it might by only incorrect translation and "red" should be "rear"?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

    TIA

    Pavel, Hi,
"Port Quarter" is a naval expression. It is the left (looking forward) rear quarter of a ship's compass. i.e. the E/A was in the aircraft's 7 - 8 o'clock on the clock face, or bearing 225 deg from the aircraft.

Just to add to Peter's reply - A/C terminology leaned heavily on RN terminology, both Ships and A/C have navigation lights - Port = Red,Stbd = Green so as you are flying along then 'Red' would be to Port (Left) from the pilots point of view.
