Crashed into the sea off Nadi Bay, Fiji on 04 October 1941.
The aircraft was flying at 2000 feet when it suddenly nosed down and dived into the water.
It is thought that the pilot may have been hit by a bullet from Vincent NZ358, which was testing it's guns in the area at the time.
Pilot Officer Ronald Williams and Pilot Officer Francis Pillans killed.

15.6. 16.55 10 aircraft took-off for strafing road between ?Acroma? and ?Fort Conazzo? and 20 to 25 MT were thoroughly strafed also a Henschel 126 was encountered and destroyed ... Sgt Daniles failed to return.

Flying Officer Antony Patrick Benson Graham SUTTON (42278)

The dark cloud of tragedy again appeared over the Squadron when P/O Cowman, P/O Sutton, Sgt Pinder and Sgt Lunn failed to return from "BUNG" on 21.11. but this cloud was almost cleared when on 25.11. the crew was rescued from dinghy by a Walrus. It transpired that the Beaufiort had forced landed in the sea owing to engine failure and that the crew had been able to take to the dinghy unijured except for the observer P/O Sutton whi suffered a severe head injury. After many cicissitudes including the rescue (the Walrus being unable to take-off with the extra load) the crew arrived back to the Squadron expect for P/O Sutton whi, we regret to say, died and was buried at sea.

AIR81/10458 Pilot Officer A P G B Sutton: died of injuries; Pilot Officer J Cowman, Sergeant R J P Lunn, Sergeant J Pinder: missing now safe; aircraft failed to return from operational flight over the Mediterranean Sea, Beaufort N1098, 39 Squadron, 21 November 1941.

The records that i am not updating are the one that are very generic -eg "Died on Active Service" without giving a reason (illness? Accident? etc)

His Probate is on FamilySearch - Says he died on way to Hospital - he was with 1 Air Depot at the time and says at Roberts Heights and the death cert at the end says 'Died of injuries received as a result of Motor Accident'
