    Moving on to the October 1941 UK casualties:

    Romuald GADUS (P/783651) - the 316 Sqn ORB From 541 records that hewas killed in Hurricane IIA Z2962 [SZ-T], which crashed just after 15.30 at Codsall, Wolverhampton. The ORB Form 540 records that the Hurricane was being taken to Walsall for a major inspection.

    Stanislaw GAWAD (P/781568) - the 301 Sqn ORB Form 540 records that he died as a result of injuries received in an M.T. accident. The Lincolnshire Echo of October 6th 1941 reported that he died in hospital after in a collison between two lorries. He had been leaning back on the canvas side of the lorry when it came into contact with the other lorry as they passed each other. He and Aircraftman Bulax fell on to the road, both suffering serious injuries. A verdict of "Accidental death" was recorded by the Coroner.

    John James WOOD (867843) - the Newcastle Journal of October 9th 1941 reported the following:
    R.A.F. Man’s Fatal Window Fall
    At an inquest at Stockton last evening on the body of John James Wood, of the R.A.F., who was billeted at Stockton and whose home address was given as Stone Street, Newcastle, it was stated by three witnesses of the R.A.F. that on October 3 the deceased and other members of the Service had a night off, and when deceased returned to his billet he was quite normal.

    Shortly after midnight he was seen to approach an open window in the darkness, and soon afterwards there was a crash of broken glass.

    It was later discovered that the deceased had fallen out of the window on to the top of a conservatory.

    Wood, it was stated, was of a very cheerful disposition, and looking forward to going home on leave the following day.
    The Deputy Coroner said, from what he had been able to gather on visiting the billet, Wood must have stood on a cushion on a seat in the window and slipped. He himself had stood on the cushion, which has slipped from under his feet.

    A verdict of “Accidental Death” was returned.

    William John BRENNAN (1360701) - the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website records that he died at Finnarts Bay, Ballantrae, due to accidental drowning the result of of an aircraft accident. His unit on the Graves Registration Report Form is listed as 10 A.G.S.

In Great Britain, after refreshing the pilot, he was assigned to 1 AGS. - Died - RAF Pembrey- "Hampden" L4164- Training flight - in difficult weather conditions, the plane crashed near Manby in Linolnshire. - buried in the cemetery at Manby, Churchyard Louth, Lincolnshire (37) UK.

    Andrew Wallace BERRY (1073087) - the Lancashire Evening Post of October 14th 1941 reported the inquest into his death. It records that he was found hanged at his home, and that he died despie attempts to revive him. A verdict of "Suicide, with insufficient evidence to show the state of mind" was returned by the Coroner.

    Thomas Daye GRAHAM (1101590) - Oxford AB767 12 S.F.T.S., collided with Ju-88 R4+NL.

    Richard MANLEY (1277629) - the Lancaster Guardian of October 24th 1941 reported the inquest into his death. It records that he was knocked down by a car. He had missed his train back to camp by a few minutes, and together with another aircfraftman had begun to walk the journey. He was hit from behind by a car, which failed to stop. The car and driver had not been traced, and a verdict of "Death by misadventure" was returned by the Coroner. The Manchester Evening News of October 11th 1941 reported that he had died in Chester Royal Infirmary.

    Frederick Stanley WATSON (C/1372) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was killed in Defiant AA281 which crashed at Wolverton near Sandringham. The accident report states that he reported on the R/T that the instruments had gone U/S and he ordered his gunner to jump. Soon after the gunner had left the aircraft, it entered a cloud layer with no instruments and he lost control.

    William Raymond SOADY (907647) - Redfern's R.C.A.F. Service File records that they died in Beaufort L9951 which crashed at Heddon Hill, Braunton. The cause of the crash was thought to be engine failure.

    Stephen D. (Steve) FASSINO (R/84031) [Stefano Domeneco Fassino] - his R.C.A.F. Servie File records that he was killed in Hurricane I V7236 of 59 O.T.U., which crashed 200 yards east of Kingstown Aerodrome.

    Reginald Charles ENGLAND (980443) - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at Appleby. The Liverpool Daily Post of December 8th 1941 reported the inquest into his death. It records that he was killed when his motor-cycle collided with an Army lorry. The driver of the lorry, Cpl. William Parker, Royal Tank Corps, was charged with 'driving the Army truck in a manner dangerous to the public.' The article reports that he overtook a car as England approached, but the defence claimed he did not realise there had been an accident until the lorry stopped in a neighbouring village. He was fined £10, with costs of £4 7s. 10d.

    John ANDREW (817097) - the 612 Sqn ORB records that he was killed when Whitley Z6961 was fired at by merchant vessels in a convoy it was sent to escort. The Whitley ditched and the crew were picked up by escort vessels, but Andrew seemingly died of his injuries before being picked up, despite attempts to revive him.

    George MacDONALD (1361490) - the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website records that he died at 4.10 p.m. at Inchparks Farm, due to electric shock and asphyxia.

    Moving on to the November UK casualties:

    Norman Reginald GERRISH (1179632) - the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette of Deember 27th 1941 reported the inquest into his death. It reported that he was killed when his motor-cycle collided with a hawser attached to a broken down Army lorry on the Devizes-Rushall road. The lorry was being towed across the road into a field, when Garrish's motor-cycle collided with the rope being used at 6.40 p.m. He died almost instantly. A verdict of "Death by misadventure" was returned by the Coroner.

    Charles Colborne GARDNER (R/68668) - Spitfire X4913 53 O.T.U.
    His R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was reported missing, presumed killed on November 3rd 1941, and that he was found in the Brecon Beacons on July 21st 1942.

    Edward Vivian WILLIAMS (746874) - the 256 Sqn ORB Form 540 records that he and pilot Sgt. Berry baled out of the Defiant during a Fighter Night Practice. Williams landed in the sea and was drowned, but Berry was uninjured.

    Ivan Raymond TRAFFORD (R/63053) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he died in Spitfire X4772 of 53 O.T.U., which crashed at Caerphilly Common after apparently stalling after a steep climb and then failing to recover from the ensuing spin at low level.

    David Lawrence MEISNER (R/ 76188) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he died in Hurricane V6735 of 56 O.T.U. which crashed 1 mile north of Great Massingham Station.

    Margaret FAWCETT (448384) - the Hampshire Telegraph of November 21st 1941 reported her funeral, and it records that she was killed in a car accident at Lyneham, Wiltshire. She waa returning to her quarters when her car was in collision with another car, and she received injuries from which she immediately succumbed.

    John Raymond SULLIVAN (R/72531) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was killed in Havoc BD124, which crashed in the sea off Worthing on a Local night Flying Test. All crew reported missing, but his body was washed ashore at Shoreham on December 8th 1941.

    Frederick Alexander HIGGINS (R/66182) - the 403 Sqn ORB records that he was killed when Spitfire W3822 crashed at 17.55, when it stalled turning into the wind when coming in to land at Martlesham on return form a convoy patrol.

    Joseph Orford KENNEDY (1102655) - the Service Returns on the Scotland's People website record that he died in the sea off Cromarty Firth due to an aircraft accident. Botha L6451 of 8 A.G.S. ?

    Allison Boyce McKIE (R/72679) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was killed in Spitfire L1083 of 58 O.T.U, which crashed at approximately 12.30 at Dall Hill, south of Ardeonaig, Perthshire. He was reported missing on November 11th, and not found until December 12th 1941.

    William Maughan McCAUSLAND (R/80920) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was killed in Hurricane P3318 of 55 O.T.U., which crashed 1 mile east of Waskerley Park Reservoir, Co. Durham. 54º 48N, 01º 54W

    John George DUNLOP (J/4754) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he died in the Royal Naval Hospital, Kingseat, as the result of injuries sustained on active service. It records that he was flying Blenheim P4845 from Wick to Dyce, became lost in fog and attempted a crash landing some 10 miles from Dyce. The Blenheim went through a heavy stone fence [sic], and he suffered a broken jaw and right femur. He died at 04.05 as the result of shock.

    at last count

    11335 records (87.09%) have circumstances of death.
    1681 records (12.91%) do not have details.

    Thank you Jagan. Onwards and upwards with the November 1941 UK casualties:

    Eric TAYLOR (1437143) - the Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald of November 28th 1941 reported that he was taken ill only seven weeks after joining the R.A.F., and died seven weeks later in a London hospital.

    Roland Horace BELLAMY (1577026) - the Nottingham Evening Post of December 23rd 141 reported the inquest into his death. He died in the Middlesex Hospital from post-vaccinal encephalitis. He had been vaccinated on October 28th, seven days after being called up. He had not been vaccinated as a child. A verdict of "Death by misadventure" was recorded by the Coroner.

    Ludwik ZASADA (P/0668) - the Statutpry Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website records that he died at 10.14 p.m. at the 33rd General Hospital, Peebles, due to softening of the internal capsule of the brain.

    William MORGAN (1115814) and
    Frederick James BEACHUS (1410498) - the Gloucester Journal of November 22nd 1941 reported that they were killed when the undercarriage of an aircraft landing at an aerodrome on the Isle of Man struck the canvas cover of a lorry in which the two men were travelling. The aircraft landed safely, but the two airmen in the lorry were killed.

    James Arthur CUNNINGHAM (69220) - the National Probate Calendar recrods that he died at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary.

    John Robert BAKER A.T.A. - Hawk Major DP848 - ran out of fuel and hit hill nr Priddy Wells, Somerset (ex G-AENS).

    James Robert MINARD (J/7016) - another one without a digitised R.C.A.F. Service File. However he was lost in Spitfire Ia X4849:

    Francis Paul MILLER (550034) and
    Ralph Edmond William WILSON (404010) - the ORB Form 540 records:
    'SGT. WILSON and SGT. MILLER were killed in the afternoon, the aircraft crashed in fog near BOXLEY.'
    No further details in the Form 541. However, from the AB serials volume, via 12OCH Forum:
    Beaufighter IF R2183 29 Sq Flew into high ground in bad visibility, Boxley Grange, Kent, 21.11.41.

    George Mason DUNAWAY (J/5796) - the 414 Sqn ORB records that he was killed in Tomahawk AH902 which crashed at Charlton Marshall near Blandford. His R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was on a navigation training flight from Croydon to Barnstaple and back, and that it crashed at 11.30. Two soldiers who witnessed the crashed stated that the Tomahawk came spinning out of cloud and continued to spin until it hit the ground.

    Norman Allan RITCHIE (R/76589) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was injured in Lysander P1714, which crashed after he opened the throttle with actuating gear fully back, causing the aicraft to climb steeply and stall at low height. He died of his injuries after admittance to R.A.F. Hospital Rauceby. Also injured in the crash was Sgt. J. F. Stein, 1167728.

    Leo YOUNG (1281411) - the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette of December 6th 1941 reported that he died at Winsley after an illness lasting one year and 12 days. He had been a law student in Melbourne, Australia, before giving up his studies to become a member of Sadlers Wells Ballet Company. He had been dancing in Holland when the Germans invaded, and what he witnessed there prompted him to join the R.A.F.

    Charles Morley HAYHURST (1049782) - the Burnely Express of Novmerb 29th 1941 reported that he was at home on sick leave after spending five weeks in a Scottish hospital suffering from meningitis, when he collapsed while walking home. He was taken to Victoria Hospital and died the following morning. Death was due to a cerebral haemorrhage, and a verdict of "death from natural causes" was returned by the Coroner.

    Air Britain's Battle File has DBR 25.11.41, no further details.

    Harry ALLEN (1274127) - the Surrey Advertiser of December 6th 1941 reported that he was found dead in a lavatory in Park Street, Guildford with a single bullet wound to the head and a revolver lying beside him. A note left with the body, addressed to the Coroner, led police to a box at home containing a number of documents dating back to 1933 showing that he intended to commit suicide. A verdict of "Suicide while the balance of the nind was disturbed" was recorded by the Coroner.

    Aleksander MATUSZEWSKI (P/781112) - the Dundee Evening Telegraph of November 28th 1941 reported that he was killed when he was struck by a military vehicle while walking along Kilduncan Farm Road near Kingsbarns. He died almost immediately.

    Kenneth George CROFTS (1243100) - the Dover Express of December 5th 1941 reported that he was killed when a Dodge lorry full of R.A.F. men hit a kerb and overturned on Folkestone Road, Dover, on its return from the Plough Inn, Hougham. Nine other men were injured. The jury at the inquest recorded a verdict of misadventure due to an error of judgment by the driver of the lorry.

    Edward Borden STEPHENSON (R/60574) - his R.C.A.F. Service File records that he was killed after Lysander R9072 of 1 A.O.S. crashed at R.A.F. Wigtown at 14.30. He was taken to Dumfries Infirmary by air ambulance as soon as his condition allowed, but died of his injuries at 20.15. The Court of Inquiry considered that he took off with the trim wheel wound back to 'landing' position, and this caused the Lysander to climb steeply after take off to about 70 feet, stall to the left, and fall to the ground. A simliar accident to Lysander P1714 on November 22nd - see above.

    Zygmunt STASZEK (P/792397) - the Nottingham Journal of December 31st 1941 reported the inquest into his death. It records that he was knocked down by a car at East Bridgford, and died in Nottingham General Hospital. The car did not stop, and car and driver had not been traced. The Coroner stated that the driver must have been aware of the accident due to the violence of the impact - he recorded a verdict of "Accidental death."

    Kevin Charles JACKMAN (70342) - the 416 Sqn ORB recorded:
    'At 11.5 a.m. enemy lone raider made a dive bombing attack killing F/Lt K. C. JACKMAN by machine gun fire. Superficial damage to Sqdn offices, 1 Spitfire rendered unserviceable.'
