    Default P/O R H Middleton RAAF VC.

    Hi All,

I have the log book to an Aussie instructor S/L H J Snowden RAAF. He was an instructor at 5 EFTS Narromine in January 1941. At that time trainees were from Course 7, 5 EFTS, among the trainees was LAC R H Middleton. According to Snowden’s logbook the first time Middleton is mentioned is on the 9th January 1941 when he took him up in tiger moth AM48 for 55 mins flying.

I wonder if this was Middleton first trip on his training to become a pilot?

He took Middleton up a total of 13 times until the end of January. I believe Course 7 graduated in February 1941, Snowden moved on in February to 9 EFTS in Cunderdin in WA.

    Regards,

    John.

    Hi John,

    Middleton's A9300 is online.

Shows him at No. 5 EFTS Narromine as of 12/12/1940.

    Cheers,

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

I thought it might, but I doubt itís got his first flight, he does not get a mention in the instructor logbook in December as do other members of that course, so he may have made his first flight with another instructor.

    Cheers,

    John.

    Hello,

Middleton was on No.7 Course at No.5 EFTS, Narromine. No.7 Course was the 12-12-1940 Entry. The course initially had 60 pupils, it finished on 6/2/1941. Rawdon Middleton's results were:

    Number: 402745
    Rank: LAC
    Name: MIDDLETON, R. H.
    Hours flown dual: 24.50
    Hours flown solo: 25.00
    Total hours flown: 50.00
    Total instrument flying.
    (Including hours flown solo): 5.10
    Link Trainer: 4.30
% for exam passes, in Ground Subjects: 87.33%
Status: 14th in order of merit.
Dux of Course 7: 400732 LAC Gordon Stanley ORCHARD (92.66%).

One weeks pre-embarkation leave, then posted to No.2 Embarkation Depot, Bradfield Park. Attached to RCAF, embarked from Sydney aboard the "Awatea" on 22 February, 1941 (the captain of the "Awatea", Captain Arthur "Eight Ten" Davey, was the father of the well-known radio/TV star, Jack Davey!).

If you haven't already done so, I suggest you read the following publication:

MIDDLETON VC. The life of Pilot Officer Rawdon Middleton VC of the Royal Australian Air Force as remembered by his friends and colleagues.
    Bill, Stuart.
    East Bentleigh (Vic.):S & L Bill,1991.

Incidentally, there was no RAAF Tiger Moth with the serial "AM48". Tiger Moth A17-48, was allotted to 5 EFTS, Narromine on 20-9-1940, so it could be this aircraft.

    Hi Col,

Thanks for the details, yes Iíve read that book. The tiger moth should have read A1748, the 17 were joined together to make it look like an ĎMí.

    John.

    John,

Nor was there any RAAF Tiger Moth marked "A1748. It was probably A17-48.
