Default Spitfire exchange between 266 and 603 October 40

    Morning,

After just five week of operations on Spitfire II, 266 based at Wittering received orders on 17 October 1940 to exchange its aircraft with 603's Spitfire Mk Is based at Hornchuch. The reason of that is unclear to me. Does anyone has an explanation?

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Can't pin down a definite reference at this minute, but I think you'll find 266 was at Wittering for rest/training during that period although flying the odd operation, and its Mk II's were passed to 603 which was a frontline 11 Group unit with the Mk I.
    regards Peter
