Default F/O John Andrew Edward (training units served with 1940-41)

Wonder if anyone can help please with information on a F/O John Andrew Edward later Flt (51120) I know he later served with 50 Sqdn and 617 Sqdn and he was lost in Lancaster DV403.

But what I particularly am interested in knowing is any training unit he may have been with from 1940 to 1941 period.

    Thanks

    Hello,

This site suggests your man was Royal Artillery and transferred to the RAF in 1942.

    Hello Dave

Good find and obviously a little later than I had been led to believe.
I have been told his first op. with 50 Squadron was the 8th July 1943 so that would mean he trained sometime between 1942 until early/mid 1943?.

As the time of his appointment to an RAF commission was 3rd Feb 1943, and you have date of his first operation 5 months after that, I am guessing that he only completed his aircrew training with an RAF school at this time (3/2/43, on attachment from RA), so this would allow a few months for further crew training with OTU, etc. So far as I know, aircrew volunteers from other British services remained a member of their parent service until successful completion of their training course in their new flying trade. On the other hand, if they failed the course, they were fairly promptly posted back to their parent service. However confirmation from other, more knowledgeable Board members on these suppositions would be most welcome.

I have actually been sent some information from my colleague who is researching John, he has come up with the following which I thought I would share.
John was gazetted 4th May 1943 from Lieutenant 51120 Royal Artillery to Pilot Officer RAF General Duties Branch effective 3rd February 1943. The next positive is that he was at 14 OTU Cottismore flying Wellingtons. 28th June 1943 1660 HCU Swinderby to 50 Squadron at RAF Skellingthorpe. First jockey flight with 50 Squadron in Lanc. DV156 8/9 July 1943 with P/O E A Dennis (killed 26/7/1943 in ED753) John's first operational flight with 50 Squadron 2nd/3rd August 1943 to Hamburg in W5004.

I have been informed that J A Edward was on Course 41 in November 1942 at RAF Cranwell.
Could anyone please enlighten me or let me know any details please what this course might have entailed.
