Default 32225 Wg Cdr Edward Philip Patrick GIBBS

This pilot was born 21 Feb 1910, but can anyone tell me where, please? I cannot find anything in the Free BMD or LDS databases, or in a general search of Google. Thanks!

    Steve, Hi,

This looks highly likely for Edward Philip Patrick Gibbs:-
He had a twin sister, Hetty. On FREEBMD she is Reg in Q1 1909 at Hampstead Vol 1a Pages 581 – or Page 591.
But if you look on Page 591 you will find Hetty and an Edward Gibbs. Possibly yr man?

    Hi Peter

Many thanks, though it actually adds a little confusion... :-(

This RAF Commands post http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...-DFC-1942-1946 suggests that the 1939 Register states his DOB was 21 Feb 1910, but Free BMD therefore suggests it was actually a year earlier...!

On checking the 1939 register (I don't have a subscription, so details are limited), it appears to suggest the RAF Commands post is correct: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/...birth_offset=2

Clearly, something's not right. Bugger, why are these things never as straightforward as they appear on face value?! :-)

    Thanks Peter

    Hello

No date of birth is given in his Evasion Report, while most usually have it !!! And also nothing at all in his book "It's further via Gibraltar" (Faber 1961) which is only about his escape in occupied France, then Spain.

Interested in any detauls too, as it's a "local" crash for me.

The British Newspaper Archives adds very little to the subject. A report on the award of his DFC is carried in the Chichester Observer - Saturday 07 February 1942 and states that his home is at Oving, West Sussex.

Does he appear in any of the Retired Lists?

You, Mr McMillan, are a LEGEND!

Many thanks to Peter, Joss, Brian (no help at all! :-D), Jonny, and of course Paul.

Jonny, to your question, not in the Retired Lists that I have (Apr 1960 and 1973), unfortunately.

Now off to see if I can find something in the Straits Times!

It looks like his POB & DOB have eluded everyone for a long time, so well done Paul and thanks very much for your time on this for me.

    Regards
    Steve
