Default Daniel Joseph Robertson - RCAF

I am trying to help a friend to locate her father’s RAF Squadron.

His name was Daniel Joseph Robertson. DOB: January 12, 1915. Hometown: Cornwall Ontario
He was in the RCAF and service number J 16393

I have been told he was a navigator on a Lancaster and had been assigned to the RAF in England. They were flying a night bombing mission from somewhere in England in January 1943. They were over Poland/Germany and the plane was shot down. Daniel and two other crew parachuted but the pilot and 3 other crew were killed when the plane exploded. He was captured the next morning and ended up as Prisoner of War #120 in Stalag Luft 111.

What we are looking for is his RAF squadron number, his family are coming to Europe and are hoping to visit his old station here as well as Stalag Luft 111.

Does anyone recognise his name or have details of Lancasters lost during January 1943 to help us pin down his squadron number?

    Thank you.

    Hi Rob,

According to Theo Boiten Nachtjagd Combat Archives their aircraft was shot down by Lt Paul Szameital of 6./NJG3 for his 9th victory. This aircraft was also claimed by 1 & 2 schw. Flak Abt 306. However Szameital was confirmed as the victor on 24/9/44. Lt Paul Szameital was later killed in action on 1/2 January 1944 with 28 night victories and 1 day victory.

    Regards,

    John.

The correct surname of the Luftwaffe airman involved was; Paul SZAMEITAT (not Szameital).
