    Hello,

    AUSTRALIA.

46328 Sgt Robert Alfred HAWKINS RAAF

46328 Sgt (Coxswain)* Robert Alfred HAWKINS RAAF (ex-RAAF Marine Section/No.76 Operational Base Unit), was officially discharged from the RAAF on 10 December, 1945. Robert Alfred Hawkins died at his home (71 Leonora St., South Como, W.A.,) from an unspecified illness, on 11 August 1947.

Sgt Robert Alfred HAWKINS RAAF, was the sole survivor when a Cyclone/Tidal Wave hit No.76 Operational Base Unit's detachment at the Bay of Rest, Western Australia, on 2 February, 1945. The facilities of 76 OBU were virtually destroyed and the area flooded to a depth of 4 feet. A 21-ton landing barge was blown from its offshore moorings and deposited inland near the 005 degree runway at RAAF Learmonth. Sgt Hawkins was swept three miles inland and three of his companions were drowned:

45887 Cpl (FMB) Bindon John CARR RAAF (76 OBU) +
81371 LAC (MBC) George Albert TONGE RAAF (76 OBU) +
45988 Cpl (FMB) Ernest Charley TURNOR RAAF (82 OBU) +

Only the body of Cpl Carr was recovered, the others were missing.

    * Sgt Hawkins RAAF, was actually the "Skipper" of RAAF General Purpose Boat 017.02 "Columbia", based at The Bay of Rest, Exmouth Gulf (Code name: "POT SHOT"), W.A. Boat 017.02, (and the landing barge), were wrecked during the cyclone.
