Default The Existence of RAF Great Baddow - Or Not

    Hello All,

Was there ever an RAF Great Baddow, nr Chelmsford? This was the WW2 home of the Inter-Service Ionospheric Research Station housed in the old Marconi Research Labs.

If so, did it render any ORBs? If not, was it likely that any RAF personnel there would have been on Detachment from one of Communications/Electronic Group HQs?

I am looking for any information/reports on WW2 H/F frequency forecasting as seen from the research end, rather than the RAF airborne wireless operatorís end! TNA is not very forthcoming!

    TIA

    Peter,

You don't give the context for your query, but have you seen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Baddow ? A Marconi Research Laboratory was opened at Great Baddow in 1936, and one can imagine this excited the attention of the military, especially the RAF. I suggest it is possible a small RAF unit/detachment was established there during the war and was addressed as RAF Great Baddow.

    Hi Peter

Great Baddow was certainly listed as the home of the ISIRS and came under the control of No 1 Signals Depot so presumably the site would have been referred to as RAF Great Baddow.
