Default Pilot Officer WALTER HENRY SHEEN (43841)

This officer was posted in to No.207 squadron 9.12.40 from C.T.S. Finningley. The next entry I can find in the London Gazette is "The commission of Pilot Officer on probation WALTER HENRY SHEEN (43841) is terminated on cessation of duty, 1st June 1941 (Gazetted 20th June 1941)" Has anyone any information on this please? I cannot think what this entry means either he did something wrong and had his commission reomoved though the wording indicates he had reached the end of say, temporary duty but then surely that would not mean the tremination of his commission? Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation

Was he still with 207 Sqn at the time of the gazette notice? Or had he been posted out before that? No clues in the 207 ORB in between?

His NCO number and name match a Royal Navy service record I found on Ancestry.com. He was a radio operator, telegraphist etc and that Initial RAF service dates from 1927 or there abouts.

The RN record has a note about RAF service.

And the name also appears in Navy List as a Sub/Lt in 1945 and 1946. Perhaps just a transfer back.

Was he flight crew in 207?

    There’s a Walter H Sheen (MMS Burgess) b. Q4 1913 Reg Shoreditch 1c 123. His 18th b/day would be Q4 1931. 506147 fits in the RAF Block 505001-549999 Enlisted Civilians issued between 1 Oct 1925 and 30 Apr 1938(?).

The RN/ RAF man was born in 1898 per the service record. Joined RN in 1916 and served 12 years at least, and then clearly more

Date of birth 4 Dec 1898.

Within the UK, WWI Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923 he is noted as:
Attached Wireless Hd Grs 6th Division - Cork

I expect that's a bed transcription of Hd Qtrs 6th Division. The scan is on Fold3

ON the 1939 Register as "RAF Sgt Felixstowe"

I see that he flew it appears as Aircrew Observer with 207 Squadron until at least May 1941

Died in 1986, Southend on Sea district

Thanks for the information. You are probably correct. I have noticed in the Gazette that Army and Navy personnel had been returned to duty from the RAF with the same phrase.

    Hi again Dennis,
I have looked at the F541 and he flew as an Observer with S/L Kydd on 207s first Manchester operataion to BREST 24/25.2.4. Will have to look at the entries more closely.
Then Hamburg 12/13.3.41 with S/L Kydd. Hamburg 13/14.3.41. The early F540s show officer Postings in and out so I will have to look at April and May for 1941.
    Thanks for the gen again

    Hello Dennis,
I Hav looked at what I have on P/O Sheen and this is what I have. The commission he was granted raised the question as you can see it was for the duration of hostilities

The undermentioned is granted a commission for the duration of hostilities as Pilot Officer on probation with effect from the dates stated and seniority of 9th May 1940: —

The commission of Pilot Officer on probation WALTER HENRY SHEEN (43841) is terminated on cessation of duty, 1st June 1941 (Gazetted 20th June 1941)
