Default Group of 20 Observers - RNZAF Personnel to RAF Squardons in the Middle East - 1941

Dear All: I am new to this site - My father was Sergeant Ewan Brooking - 401454 - he was trained in NZ starting in June 1940 in a group of 20 Observers that all then went to the Middle East by ship and were assigned to various RAF Squadrons - I have a copy of a graduation dinner menu that all 20 signed and I am trying to find out who all 20 were and what happened to them - my father once said only 10 made it back to New Zealand - the names that I have but have no details for are:

M.R. Clarke - possibly became a Pilot Officer
    Walter Thomas Killgour
    H. ? James
    Robert Paterson Reid
    Dennis Keeble Carey

There are a few names I cannot decipher, but the service numbers of the group are generally in the range of 401430 through 401465, if anyone has listings by service number.

If anyone can help with any details, it would be greatly appreciated ..... Thanks!!

I suspect this your man Reid who went on to be commissioned: http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/schol...AF-c2.html#n23
I see your father went on to be a WO and serve in Burma as well as the ME: http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/schol...-c12.html#n276

    Further to my last:
Dennis Keeble Carey to be PO wef 26 Oct 40.
Flt Lt wef 26 Oct 42
Trans to Res as a Flt Lt wef 26 Jun 45
According to the Electoral Rolls he married, lived in Wellington and was an Accountant.

NZ 401437 WO Walter Thomas Kilgour to be PO wef 5 Aug 44
Trans to Res as a FO wef 27 Apr 45
According to the Electoral Rolls he married, lived in Palmerston North and was a Public Servant

Richard Paterson Reid to be PO wef 26 Oct 40
To be Flt Lt wef 26 Oct 42
It is possible that he is the Robert Paterson Reid in the Electoral Rolls as married, living in Wellington and working in commerce.

I think the last two men in list above should also have "NZ" prefixes to their service numbers. Errol will tick me off if I am wrong!

Wow! - Trevor,Col, Errol and David - its great to get that info - thanks so much! - I have been looking over the list of 17 AO's on the Nov 8 departure for the Middle East and reconciling it with what I assumed to the be group of 20 that my father had mentioned as his training group - the 17 contains three names that I believe were not in Dad's particular training group - Harry Duignan, Tom Dunn and V G Morris. However, from what I can make out from the Group of 20 signatures, Alan Stevens-Jordan (NZ401304) and M.R. Clarke were - I believe that Alan Stevens-Jordan died April 23, 1942 in the NZ Hospital in Cairo - meningitis from burst ear-drums. I think M.R.Clake may have served with NZRAF squadrons 14 & 15 - My father did serve with Harry Duignan and they corresponded when not in service at the same place. He became a good pal with Chris Jenkinson during training - they were separated when they reached Kabrit, but some months later Chris turned up at 113 Squadron in late September, 1941 - he and Dad shared a dugout - sadly he was killed on his second op on October 20 as you have in the list

    Bryan,
Petty certain that the Maurice Richard ("Morrie") Clarke (NZ391824) you mentioned did NOT go on the ship to the Middle East in late 1941. He only served in NZ and the South Pacific, with station Ohakea as staff pilot, undertook a flying instructor's course Nov/Dec 1940, then served as instructor with 3 EFTS (Harewood) Dec 40 - June 42, then 1 EFTS (Taieri) June - Nov 42. Operational career was with 14 Squadron (Nov 1942 to July 1943, then with 2 OTU (Ohakea Oct 43 - Aug 44, then undertook an abbreviated Corsair conversion course at Ardmore Aug 1944 before posting to 15 Sqdn as Flight Commander August 1944; finally appointed CO of 15 Sqdn, served as such January to Sept 1945.
