Default Missing records in ORB in TNA

Hi all, when there is written in the ORB held in the TNA of some particular squadron that some record is missing - it is possible that it can be elsewhere? For example RAF Historical branch?
For example the ORB search on this site shows no records (both F540 and F541) for 58 Sq for September 1942 (AIR 27/544) and F541 for August stated - "Septemebr 1942 record missing".

    TIA

I have come across a number of gaps in squadron ORBs and some include explanations and in most of those case they were lost at the time probably during a move. Others were probably disposed of accidentally as they passed from one archive to the next.

I doubt the RAF AHB hold any of the ORBs that have been cleared for release to the public apart from the most recently cleared ones that may not have been moved. The only other source of information for the missing sections would be individual log books from aircrew of the relevant squadron. This is not ideal but if the log is reasonably detailed it might help fill some blanks. The International Bomber Command Centre Digital Archive hold a large number but I haven't tried searching for specifics yet.

It is also worth pointing out that many Record Books of different types were not kept and were probably destroyed or sold off during the quest for space in the sixties. Examples would be the Flying Control Logs for each airfield, Range Log Books, there would have been one for each range and would have been a mine of useful information- to me anyway!

You may find helpful material in the ORB for higher levels of command in this case I assume that would be 18 Group (?) or there might be relevant info in the Base ORB.

Hi PNK and Steve, thank you both for useful info.
Steve, thank you for suggestion - I was also thinking about the group Group ORB but according to my experience from other Group ORBs there are not recorded complete crews in reports of operational activity so it would be impossible to cover tour of operation of an individual who was not a captain or navigator.

    Hi Pavel
They vary enormously in what they contain, but sometimes you might find crew lists for a night's ops in the Appendices of a squadron's ORB.

Thanks Ian, good to know, but it is not this case I am afraid - there are only statistcs of personnel, losses and flown hours.
