Default FFAF aircrew names - definitive list of spellings?

    Hi all

Given the inaccuracies and inconsistencies that can be found in RAF ORB's, does anyone know if there is anywhere (esp. online) somewhere where you can look up the true spelling of FFAF personnel surnames?

    Thanks

    Hello Ian

I don't know of any "single" source where you can check the correct spellings of Free French personnel surnames. Compared to other countries, not many archives have been digitized and/or are accessible online.
One such source is "Mémoire des hommes" https://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.def....php?laref=101
but you'll have to check one by one, sometimes trying various spellings.
It's not complete, for example for French airmen who joined the Free French Forces directly, or the R.A.F. directly, without having been formerly members of the Armée de l'Air for example.
I can suggest the book "Aviateurs de la Liberté", published by the then Service Historique de l'Armée de l'Air, but this was published in 1992 and the general knowledge about these casualties has greatly improved since it was published. It only covers FFAF airmen killed in action / active service.
For complex cases, we have to rely on the "Etat-Civil", the equivalent of your BMD registers, but one has to contact the city where the airman was born, and knowing this bit of information may already be a difficulty in itself. We usually consider the spelling of the birth certificate to be the correct one, but some surnames were altered, or other first names used rather than the "official" one.

    Hi Ian

Memoire des hommes is not the best one for spelling ; there are many errors and even we wrote them to correct it is rarely done ; try also this website even you will have not all the French posted in UK :
