    Default 2744 Squadron RAF Regiment

I am researching an NCO who served with the above unit throughout the war and wondered whether any kind soul has the ORB that they would be prepared to share. I would be more than happy to contribute to a beer fund of their choice. Being in Kenya limits my chances of getting to Kew.

    Many thanks in advance

I don't have the ORB but I do have some information on the squadron movements ..... is there anything in particular you are looking for (or is the ORB your only option)

    Regards

    Pete,

The movements are available on the title page for the ORB, so I'm good there, thanks. It's the ORB are their operations in North Africa and Italy that I'm after.

    All the best

    Jonny,

I finally registered here after seeing your request for the 2744 ORBs.

I have these ORBs from their commencement in November 1942 to July 1943 when they were in Lampedusa, which is approximately the period my father was a senior NCO with them before his transfer to 2862.
A small number of NCOs are mentioned. Can you give me a name so I can look it up?

Thanks Tim. I'll ping you a PM with the details.

    Kind rgds

    Jonny

Edit: Sorry Tim, but I don't think I'm able to send you a PM. Perhaps this is something to do with you having recently joined. The individual's details are - 954888 Sgt Benjamin H. Deitch BEM RAFVR. Many thanks.

    hi jonny,
The good news is that a Cpl Deitch, was involved with my father Flt/Sgt Davis, in the incident in which AC1 Quigley won the MM. You can find some scant details in his citation.

It appears that in support of 1 Recce Regiment,2 AFVs were patrolling in the region of Mejez el Bab in Easter week 1943 when one of the vehicles containing both Deitch and my father was destroyed by enemy fire. There appears to have been a fire fight, after which Deitch, LAC Meyers and my father returned to unit. Quigley and an unnamed airman were caught behind enemy lines making their way back to safety two days later. A search by P/O Mills, Cpl Porter, and AC1 Taylor the day after the incident failed to locate the missing pair due to a blocked road and heavy shelling.

This appears to be the only reference to Deitch in the period from November 1942 which covers the embarkation on "Windsor Castle" in the CLyde, to July 1943 when 2744 is on Lampedusa and my father is transferred to 2862.

I will try to change my settings to enable PM. I should then be able to email you the relevant pages of the ORB.

Are you interested in further background on 2744 in Torch or just In Sgt Deitch?
