    Default SOE Archives Expert Sought

A friend has reason to believe that a female relative (who spoke fluent German) was trained in Canada as an SOE agent but never parachuted onto the Continent or deployed, possibly because of progress made on the ground after D Day. She would like to know more about this woman’s history— her recruitment, training and activities. I realize that much SOE material was kept Top Secret for decades, but understand that a great deal has been declassified in recent years. Browsing through National Archives catalogues strikes me as being like looking for a needle in a haystack, and that the beginning of a solution is to find the expert who is a specialist in haystacks, able to recommend or direct research to a particular block of files. I would appreciate, on behalf of my friend, guidance - either here on the forum or by e-mail to me (halliday@bell.net) respecting what relevant files might now be open.

    Hello,

Looks like a good place to start:

HS 9 Special Operations Executive (PF Series)

I haven't seen any of these files, but several sources quote them as a reference.

Here is the file reference for a famous female SOE Operative:

    HS 9/1435 & 22666A - SZABO, Violette Reine Elizabeth GC, MBE, C de G., M de la R F.

I assume that he knows full personal details of the woman in question? Lots of SOE files were in fact declassified and are available at TNA. I am not sure if there are any files concerning not deployed people. I guess there should be a few venues though. There were some operations planned for the advance in Normandy, but they were recalled indeed, because Germans were running away faster than the possibility to launch the operation. I am aware of further operations in the Germany proper at the end of the war, but all combat teams were male. They were not subordinated to SOE, though. I can put you in touch with an SOE researcher, so if you like drop me an email, please.
