    Hi Amrit,

    The site omits Sgt A A Rolfe and muddles crash date.

    A/c Q took off on 5/02/42 at 15:40 hrs and crashed just after 02:00 hrs on the 6th.

    Hallo all,

    Firstly it should be HUGH Jones.

    Actually there was a 12th crew member who is not listed on that website also.
    F/Sgt. John Frederick Charles Smith, 526315, age 26.

    Unusual to find 3 of 12 with the same surname ?

    Personnel on two Coastal Look-Out Posts in County Donegal heard the explosion(s) and later saw flames on the ocean. The time given is approximately 00.20 hours (I am not sure if Irish and British times were the same). The crash location was estimated by these experienced observers as '9 miles North of Rossan Point' and '12 miles West of Dunmore Head'. The LOP details come from their respective logbooks, now preserved in the Irish Military Archives in Dublin.

    Sorry my mistake (typing error) it is Hugh and not Pugh, did not mean to mislead in anyway. Just sent off for a new set of fingers just in case the old ones get confused again.

    Just wondering, I was doing up a report on this and wondered what did the TOO refer to in the ORB entry:

    This aircraft failed to return from its mission. At 2250, a message was received at base “Returning to Base. ETA0000. TOO 1930” (1930 probably error for 9.30 p.m). At 0020, ICELAND were in W/T touch with W3977.

    Excellent!! Thanks Col. Thats a new term for me.

    So the aircraft would have broadcast a message at 9.30pm, it was picked up somewhere, and passed back to Lough Erne by 22:50.

    Would each and every airfield be able to pick up with aircraft message directly when say on a Coastal Command patrol or a bomber command sortie, or were those kind of longer range transmissions picked up by separate stations and relayed back to the bases. never thought about that before.
