Default W/O Robert James Mansfield 1166476. RAF POW 1/4/42 Mediterranean.

    Hi All,

Im looking for details on the loss of a Beaufort (86 Sqn) lost on its transfer to Middle East on 1/4/42. I have details on the pilot (Mansfield) including his pow file. Any details on the aircraft, the reason for its loss and the rest of the crew would be gratefully accepted.

    Regards,

    John.

    Hello,

Are you sure you have got the correct date? I suspect the Beaufort concerned might be: OADU, Beaufort II AW338, which went missing between Gibraltar and Malta on 5-4-1942. the pilot I have listed is: AUS408013 F/O (Pilot) Thomas James Noel MITCHELL RAAF*. Mitchell was interned in Algeria until freed by the Americans, after they occupied the area.

I can't access my own files at the moment, and AVG is telling me my connection is not private, and blocking access to the NAA!

    * See: Wingless/Roberts/p.347.

    Hi Col,

Yes his pow file states he was captured on the 1/4/42. He states he was held in Rome for 4 weeks solitary before he was sent to Camp 65, then eventually to Germany, he is a pilot, but if he was the pilot when it crashed Im not sure. Thanks for your efforts.

    Thanks Gents,

That seems to eliminate Beaufort II AW338!

    Hi
The ORBs for Air HQ Gibraltar and AHQ Malta both record the loss of AW338 on the 5th, but indicate no other transit losses between 31st March- 4th April.
However, for 30th March, Gibraltar reported 1 Beaufighter, 2 Beauforts and 3 Hudsons flew to Malta. 1 of the Hudsons crashed on landing burst into flames and all the crew were killed. Another Wellington and 2 Beauforts which also took off at this time are missing.
Also, for 30th March, Malta reported the following transit losses:
Wellington BB511, 30/3, Missing from Gib.
Beaufort AW201, 30/3, Missing from Gib.
Beaufort N1034, 30/3, Missing from Gib.
Perhaps one of these 2 Beauforts is a candidate for this loss. It was not uncommon for downed aircrew to spend a day or two in the dinghy or wandering about in enemy-held territory before being picked up, so an aircraft loss on 30th March is not totally inconsistent with the 1st April date of capture.

    Thanks Niall and Paul,

Looks like N1034 Beaufort was his aircraft, Paul I did a search for my correspondence with Ross but couldnt find it, that list of Canadians do you think that was the rest of his crew?

    Cheers,

    John.
