    Default The Old Forum

    Hello folks,

did any one have a back up of the old forum, I thougth I recalled some mention late last year.

I don't know whether its just both my work and home computers but this last fornight I can get access to very little of the messages in the old forum.

Just now randomly searching for Ashworth site:rafcommands.com I couldn;t access many of the old threads that were returned by google.

Remember that the Main Category forum on the old oone contained an archive of 430 plus pages of archives each with 30 threads, thats 13000 plus threads! Good bad and indifferent!

I tried webspidering it one night but it didn't seem to work at all. Any ideas Ross and posters in general?

Am I the only finding it difficult to access the archives?

    Hello Dennis,

Try this one. Much has gone, but pieces of threads can be found back to the old "Blue Forum".

Just needs a better index/search system.

    Dennis,
Just write "site:www.rafcommands.com Ashworth" in stead of "site:rafcommands.com Ashworth"

Default The Old Forum Lives !

Although I seldom access it (and when I do I usually need help) I can attest that it survives out there in The Great Electronic Domain. Recently I have had two inquiries from persons asking about DFC citations of family members; they had found them on a list of "unpublished" citations which I put onto the former website, probably two years ago. Apparently the "googled" the person's name and found the list.

    Thanks chaps,

I'm not looking for anything in particular. I was just concerned about not being able to get into the vast amount of data that is in there, thats all.

I'm trying something here now and will see what the result is tomorrow evening.

Ross, you could add those two links to the main intro page and the google bots might take a run in there on thier next visit?? Did you get my message in the sticky during the week?

I do know that it exists out there, its just that for the few items I wanted it didn't return. Two threads mentioning G-AGES Sunderland. And one for Wellignton HF449. As I say, I'm trying something here and I'll get back tomorrow.

OK, I spidered the DC6 directory last night and 80 MB later:

There are 454 odd html files visible at the link above.

Then there are 13000+ txt files within the data folder.

    A sample of each:
    http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/18.html

    http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/18.txt

I had thought they would be the same thread but their not.

In anycase, I can find the threads I wanted from this download so my problem is solved, its just the viewing of the txt files is not great.

Popping the number 18 into this link format:
    http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=18&forum=DCForumID6& archive=yes

    Makes it easier to read.

This thread about Sgt Rathbone does show up on a google search but thread 10119 about a F L Senciall does not. (I.e. when searching for Rathborn or Senciall)

Anyway, thats all I can add I think.

    Dennis
